The Fontainebleau Las Vegas project began in 2005, when Turnberry Associates announced plans to build a $2.9 billion hotel and casino on the site of the former El Rancho Hotel and Casino. The project was designed by Bergman, Walls & Associates, and it was intended to be the tallest building in Las Vegas, with a height of 735 feet and 68 floors.

Construction began in 2007, but the project was stalled in 2008 due to the financial crisis. The unfinished building was later sold to Carl Icahn in 2010 for $150 million, and it was renamed The Drew Las Vegas. However, Icahn did not complete the project, and it was sold again in 2018 to The Witkoff Group and New Valley LLC, who plan to finish construction and open the resort in 2023 under its original name, Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
